Information/Bio:
With a voice that has been described as both heartbreaking and uplifting “ (Miriam’s ) tales are presented rich, deep, and resonating not only lyrically, but musically” Michael Smith Drum media Miriam’s adventurous spirit is infused into the lyrics, melodies and passion of her music. With a background in Latin, African and Contemporary folk she accompanies her powerful vocals with kora (African harp), acoustic guitar, and balaphone (wooden xylophone). She is a poetic, intelligent lyricist and a diverse performer. As well as popular solo and accompanied work, her credits include co-writing puppet theatre, providing musical accompaniment for dance theatre and giving workshops to children and adults. Many of Miriam’s songs take their inspiration from long periods of time living in West Africa, India and Latin America. She performs songs that tell tales of the people, places and stories she has lived - of the joy that the monsoon brings to an African shanty town, finding an abandoned baby on an Indian train, and of the succulent lime green hills of Ecuador. She writes and sings in five different languages. Miriam has recorded two albums. The most recent was recorded in Africa, with her band. Self titled ‘Wakeli’ meaning 'courage' in the African Susu language. It is heavily influenced by West African rhythms and traditional instruments mixed with contemporary folk. Her first album titled ‘Naked Without My Cello’ was Completed in May 2004. As well as creating a dedicated fan base it propelled Miriam and Cellist Kate Adams onto the festival circuit around Australia. Some of the highlights of her career so far are performing at the 2006 Guinean national jazz festival headlined by Ali Farka Toure, touring remote communities of NT Australia, performing to sellout crowds as vocalist for the acclaimed dance piece ‘The Firebird’ as well as touring across Australia as both narrator and musician for African shadow puppetry piece ‘The Mermaids Daughter’.
Past performances: The Boite, Yungaburra folk festival, ArtBack NT touring program, Earth festival,
