Information/Bio:
“A lush tapestry of the ancient and the modern, Koto's songwriting mesmerizes and spellbinds. Spanish and Eastern rhythms accentuate engaging harmony and a warm, angelic voice that penetrates deeply.
Koto (aka Kirsty Morphett) entered into the Melbourne music scene in 2002, when she entered the Australian Songwriter’s Association Wax Lyrical Songwriting Competition. As the debut of her solo material, it was an affirming experience to make it through to the semi finals of this competition. In this competition she met Mijo Biscan, with whom she would form Lamplight, who have received critical acclaim for their second self-titled album, and have toured nationally and internationally in the last 12 months.
From 2005, Koto collaborated with percussionist Rachel Oliphant and violinist, Tim Howden, playing a wide range of Melbourne venues, and creating an EP in 2006-7 titled “The Owl in the Woods Knows”. This EP was the fruit of a grant from independent label Mescalito records, and was recorded at 30 Mill Studios and mixed at Atlantis Studios. After the launch of this album during the 2007 Darebin Music Feast, the trio disbanded and Kirsty has been working on a new ensemble to debut in 2009/10.
Past performances: Boite World Cafe, Sustainable Living Festival 2006
