Bulgarian Singing Series for Women
From April 25 to May 9, The Boite presents a series of workshops in Bulgarian song for experienced women singers, led by Bagryana Popov.
This will be a fantastic opportunity to delve into Bulgarian song. We will work on exquisite repertoire; both authentic melody and drone harmonies, and songs in choral arrangements in 3 or 4 parts.
Each workshop session will include a focused vocal warm-up, work on vocal production, rhythm, ornamentation, language and the harmonic and dynamic qualities of the song
The aim of the workshops will be to learn the songs in an in-depth, confident way, to a very good performance standard and with a clear understanding of the character of each song.
This workshop series is suitable for women with experience in singing individually and/or in choirs. We will be learning material which includes complex harmonies and rhythms. You need to be comfortable singing in new languages.
Bagryana is a Bulgarian singing leader, and an award-winning theatre director, who has worked in theatre and music for over 20 years in Melbourne, and across Australia. Bagryana was the founder and conductor of award winning women’s choir Petrunka for 11 years. The choir performed Bulgarian songs to great acclaim in numerous contexts in Melbourne and regional Victoria from 1992 to 2003. Bagryana is a lecturer at La Trobe University, singing and music teacher, and community artist.
