Chakam Ensemble with Julia Reidy
Chakam Ensemble offer a rare example of an all-female ensemble performing Persian classical music. The three virtuosi - Sogol Mirzaei (tar), Vahideh Eisaei (qanun) and Saghar Khadem (tombak) - live separately between France, the Netherlands, and Australia, and have featured at many international festivals including in Geneva, Lyon, and Paris. Their performances are built according to the rules of the subtle art of radif, where intense rhythmical moments answer profound melodious tirades, where intimate and modern improvisations join authentic ancient Persian compositions. Supporting their only Melbourne performance is German-based and Australian-born guitarist Julia Reidy - known for her ongoing collaborations with Tony Buck (The Necks) and Australian violinist Jon Rose - who returns to Australia in 2018 to perform her extraordinary and arresting solo work on 12-string guitar.
