Klezmer Dance in East Kew
Presented by Audrey Fine – dance caller & Bohemian Nights (Ernie Gruner & Phil Carroll)
in association with The Leo Baeck Centre for Progressive Judaism, East Kew”
After five successful years at the annual Boîte Klezmer Gypsy Dance in Northcote, band leader and violinist, Ernie Gruner is bringing his signature klezmer line and circle dances to Leo Baeck Centre.
With music from Bohemian Nights, Gruner joins forces with expert dance caller Audrey Fine to invite audiences on to the floor to learn the steps and rhythms to irresistible traditional Yiddish and gypsy folk tunes. Dancers of all ages and stages are welcome. Experienced dancers and beginners alike will be lured into the mix of music, fun and movement.
Bohemian Nights is a duo made up of Phil Carroll (accordion, vocals) and Gruner (violin, mandolin, vocals). Together they have released two CDs and toured New Zealand seven times and Western Australia three times, playing their infectious mix of klezmer, gypsy, European, Middle Eastern and jazz. They are also part of Klezmeritis and regular favourites at Shir Madness Jewish Music Festival, Canberra’s National Folk festival and Cygnet Folk Festival.
For this special evening, Bohemian Nights will team up with dance caller Audrey Fine, who has studied the art of folk dance calling around the world. Last December she studied klezmer dancing at Yiddish New York festival. A founding member of popular band Shenanigans, Fine also played with Gruner in Zingaro, one of Melbourne’s early gypsy bands, at Woodford and Port Fairy festivals 20 years ago.
Gruner has been at the forefront of Australia’s klezmer revival. He studied and performed klezmer violin at festivals in the USA, Canada and East Europe and has played with international outfits including London Klezmer Quartet.
Originally a Hebrew word for musical instrument, klezmer is the traditional Jewish folk music of Eastern Europe, derived partly from gypsy tunes. Its timeless appeal lies in its moving concoction of irresistably joyous dance tunes heard at Jewish weddings and celebrations, with a persistent trace of melancholy.
Don't miss a wonderful night of music, dance and joy as we celebrate Australia’s love affair with klezmer.
