About the Event
In collaboration with The Boite, Pichumani School of Carnatic Music & The Iyer Brothers present the eighth edition of Melbourne Veena Festival 2024.
The festival features two days of live concerts by renowned veena artists from India & Australia, ably supported by percussion artists from Australia.
The Veena (also referred to as the Saraswati Veena) is one of the most ancient string instruments of India. It is a delicate, beautiful instrument that, in the hands of a master, can express all the nuances of Carnatic vocal and instrumental music. The veena has a unique tonal quality due to its construction, starting with a bass sound in the lower octaves and shriller tones in the higher octaves, very similar to the human voice.
Day 1 | Sat 24 August 5:30pm - 9pm
Day 1 of the event showcases local Australian talent as well as a full length concert of the master performer D Balakrishna, who hails from the rich Mysore tradition of veena playing.
Day 2 | Sat 25 August 5:30pm - 9pm
Day 2 of the event showcases local Australian talent as well as a full length concert of the mother and daughter duo Emani Kalyani Lakshminarayana and Padmini Pasumarthy, who hail from the rich Andra tradition of veena playing.
