About the Event
Last time Zulya & The Children of the Underground played at POME it was a 3 piece – this time there will be five of them, a special occasion to celebrate their new music with you. They play beautiful music inspired by Zulya’s Tatar and Australian identity, but it defies being easily labelled.
It has been described as 'Kurt Weillish, Euro-Cabaret jazz colliding with lullabies constructed to tear your heart out' striking 'a deft balance between melancholic sadness and the unbridled joy that is never too faraway'. Sixteen years, four albums, two ARIA nominations and one ARIA award since their inception, the ensemble is placed firmly at the crossroads of restlessness and the sublime. The result: a transformative concert music that is haunting and nuanced, with Zulya’s smouldering vocals supported and enriched by accordion, piano, guitar, double bass and drums.
